Abstract

A mismatch between shoe sizes and the foot anthropometric characteristics of Indonesian women can cause discomfort and affect shoe fit, particularly for women whose daily activities involve significant standing and walking. This study aims to identify the foot anthropometric characteristics of women in Bandung who engage in high levels of standing and walking and to analyze how these characteristics align with shoe sizing systems currently on the market. The study employed an anthropometric approach involving direct measurements of 100 Indonesian female respondents aged 18–35 years with high levels of standing and walking activity. Measured dimensions included foot length, foot width, instep circumference, mid-foot height, heel-ankle circumference, ankle circumference, and arch height. Data were analyzed using normality tests, uniformity tests, data adequacy tests, descriptive statistics, and comparative analysis against commercial shoe sizing systems. The results indicate that the respondents' feet had an average length of 24 cm and an average width of 9.13 cm. Comparisons with commercial sizing standards revealed a discrepancy in foot length of 2.49–3.09 cm within the EU size range of 38–42, suggesting a tendency toward over-sizing in commercially available shoes. The "Japan Size 24.0 cm" system most closely matched the respondents' average foot length, although its application would still require adjustments to account for local anthropometric characteristics. Therefore, the development of shoe sizing standards based on the foot anthropometry of Indonesian women and the design of a master shoe last incorporating a 10–15 mm allowance are recommended to produce footwear that is more ergonomic, comfortable, and better suited to user characteristics
